Do You Have Too Many Holiday Decorations?
Have you ever looked in your garage or attic and wondered why you have so many holiday decorations? Do you even put them out anymore? Do they work? What can you do with them? It can be hard to throw out old decorations as they may evoke treasured memories. However, there comes a point when it’s time to clean out your no longer used holiday décor. Wondering how to choose what stays and what goes? Here are some questions to ask yourself that may help you decide.
1. Does it Work?
We’re all guilty of hanging onto that special holiday decoration that doesn’t work anymore with the best of intentions of fixing it. However, if it’s been more than one season since you pledged to fix it, chances are it’s ready for the pitch pile.
2. Have You Set It Up in the Past Two Years?
If you haven’t set up a decoration in two or more years, it’s time to get rid of it. If it still works, isn’t too badly faded, perhaps you should put it on a buy/sell/trade page and see if you can keep it out of a landfill. Otherwise, put it aside to throw it away.
3. Do You or Your Kids Still Love It?
Often kids age out of decorations. Perhaps they think Paw Patrol is now babyish and the once beloved Chase and Marshall ghosts are no longer loved. Find someone else who will enjoy them.
4. Is it Worth the Storage Space?
Many holiday decorations come unassembled and take up little room in the trunk of the car. However, once assembled they take more space than you’d like to give up. This is especially true when you have to keep things in a basement or garage. If you’re tired of storing it, either get rid of it before the holiday or pledge not to put it back in your garage, basement or attic again after the season.
5. How Does it Look?
Even if it’s a loved piece, sometimes it’s time to get rid of it. Decorations in the sun fade. Stored items can become water damaged or pest infested. If it doesn’t add to your home’s holiday curb appeal or indoor décor, it’s time to dispose of it.
