Do You Have Too Many Holiday Decorations?

Have you ever looked in your garage or attic and wondered why you have so many holiday decorations? Do you even put them out anymore? Do they work? What can you do with them? It can be hard to throw out old decorations as they may evoke treasured memories. However, there comes a point when it’s time to clean out your no longer used holiday décor. Wondering how to choose what stays and what goes? Here are some questions to ask yourself that may help you decide.

1.      Does it Work?

We’re all guilty of hanging onto that special holiday decoration that doesn’t work anymore with the best of intentions of fixing it. However, if it’s been more than one season since you pledged to fix it, chances are it’s ready for the pitch pile.

2.      Have You Set It Up in the Past Two Years?

If you haven’t set up a decoration in two or more years, it’s time to get rid of it. If it still works, isn’t too badly faded, perhaps you should put it on a buy/sell/trade page and see if you can keep it out of a landfill. Otherwise, put it aside to throw it away.

3.      Do You or Your Kids Still Love It?

Often kids age out of decorations. Perhaps they think Paw Patrol is now babyish and the once beloved Chase and Marshall ghosts are no longer loved. Find someone else who will enjoy them.

4.      Is it Worth the Storage Space?

Many holiday decorations come unassembled and take up little room in the trunk of the car. However, once assembled they take more space than you’d like to give up. This is especially true when you have to keep things in a basement or garage. If you’re tired of storing it, either get rid of it before the holiday or pledge not to put it back in your garage, basement or attic again after the season.

5.      How Does it Look?

Even if it’s a loved piece, sometimes it’s time to get rid of it. Decorations in the sun fade. Stored items can become water damaged or pest infested. If it doesn’t add to your home’s holiday curb appeal or indoor décor, it’s time to dispose of it.

Junk Removal Tips for Your Home

We’re all guilty of holding on to some things for a bit too long. If you’re feeling like your home is overrun with things that should have been thrown away years ago, calling a junk removal company is a great way to do it with little actual work on your part. However, if you know that you want to keep, sell or donate some of the items, but just don’t know where to start, we have some tips for you.

Start Big

One of the easiest ways to feel like you’re making progress is to start with big items. If you have old furniture, holiday decorations or even large boxes that you need to decide what to do with, start with those. Take pictures and immediately post the items you want to sell or give away in a neighborhood give-sell-trade group. The faster you can be rid of large items, the more progress you’ll feel you’re making. If these items aren’t fit for people to use, tag them for your junk removal company.

Open Boxes

Chances are if you’ve been in your home more than a few years and still have unopened boxes that they’re full of things you don’t really need. However, if you can’t tell by the label what’s in the box, open it up and then clearly mark it for disposal if that’s what you’re doing with it. If the contents belong to your kids who have long since moved out, snap a picture and ask them what they want to do with the items and suggest they take it home their next visit.

Empty Closets

One of the fastest ways to get rid of things you don’t need is to completely empty a closet and only put back what you want and need. You may be surprised at the number of too small shoes, mismatched gloves or other things that really shouldn’t be in your home anymore. Cleaning out all your closets may give you some much needed storage space you didn’t even know you already had.

Whether you decide to start the cabinet junk removal from your kitchen or bathroom, no doubt there will be plenty of trash and perhaps some give away items. Things like towels that aren’t good for people are great to donate to animal shelters or rescues. Expired medicine should be set aside and taken to a collection site. As for the mis-matched storage containers, recycle or throw them away.

Now that you’ve looked around your home, do you need the help of a junk removal company? They can take care of all the garbage you realize you have in your home. You won’t have to move boxes or carry furniture out. Just call Pitch Crew at (571) 200-7851. We’ll come in and follow your instructions regarding the piles or rooms that have items you want gone. Garage, Meet Car!

If your car and your garage haven’t had a close relationship since you moved in, chances are good that you have a lot of junk in there that needs to be organized, thrown out or donated. We see cars parked in driveways and along the streets in neighborhoods throughout northern Virginia. If you’re looking for a way to get your car in the garage, here are some ideas that may help you.

Things with Wheels

As you stand in your garage, how many bikes do you see? How many do you need? We get it, giving away or selling your kids bikes means they’re not so little anymore. However, bikes, tricycles, big wheels and other wheeled toys take up a lot of space. If your little ones aren’t so little anymore, it’s time to let those toys go. If you and your family have bikes that they do use, look into a wall or ceiling mount rack for your bikes. It keeps them out of the way, yet easily accessible.

Other Toys

Bats, balls, gloves, pool noodles, kites and other toys can easily be organized. Your local home improvement store sells easy to install wall systems that allow you to put these items away so they take up minimal space. Of course, if they’re not being used anymore, sell or donate them. Play it Again Sports will sell quality used sporting goods for you.

The same wall units that can organize your kids’ toys can organize dad’s too. From wall mount cabinets that can go above the hood of the car to tool cases that can roll out of the way when not in use, you can find a way to store your occasionally used items in an organized manner.

This is by far the biggest hurdle for many homeowners. If you look in the garage of a home that you’ve lived in more than a few months and still see boxes that haven’t been opened, chances are that you don’t need whatever is in them. If the old washer and dryer or refrigerator that came with the home are sitting unused in your garage, they should go. However, if you’re not content with just pitching them, open them and sort the items into four piles:

  1. Garbage
  2. Donate
  3. Sell
  4. Put Away

Apply the same principles to the piles of stuff in the basement too.

You may find that you have more in the ‘garbage’ pile than you anticipated. If you don’t have the time to handle the clean out yourself and don’t want to make multiple trips to the dump, call Pitch Crew. We’ll come in and dispose of the junk taking up space in your garage. We can handle old bikes, electronics, appliances, furniture and more. Give us a call at 571-200-7851 and schedule a team to come to your home so you can get your car where it belongs…into your garage!
