Garage, Meet Car!

If your car and your garage haven’t had a close relationship since you moved in, chances are good that you have a lot of junk in there that needs to be organized, thrown out or donated. We see cars parked in driveways and along the streets in neighborhoods throughout northern Virginia. If you’re looking for a way to get your car in the garage, here are some ideas that may help you.

Things with Wheels

As you stand in your garage, how many bikes do you see? How many do you need? We get it, giving away or selling your kids bikes means they’re not so little anymore. However, bikes, tricycles, big wheels and other wheeled toys take up a lot of space. If your little ones aren’t so little anymore, it’s time to let those toys go. If you and your family have bikes that they do use, look into a wall or ceiling mount rack for your bikes. It keeps them out of the way, yet easily accessible.

Other Toys

Bats, balls, gloves, pool noodles, kites and other toys can easily be organized. Your local home improvement store sells easy to install wall systems that allow you to put these items away so they take up minimal space. Of course, if they’re not being used anymore, sell or donate them. Play it Again Sports will sell quality used sporting goods for you.

Tools

The same wall units that can organize your kids’ toys can organize dad’s too. From wall mount cabinets that can go above the hood of the car to tool cases that can roll out of the way when not in use, you can find a way to store your occasionally used items in an organized manner.

Junk

This is by far the biggest hurdle for many homeowners. If you look in the garage of a home that you’ve lived in more than a few months and still see boxes that haven’t been opened, chances are that you don’t need whatever is in them. If the old washer and dryer or refrigerator that came with the home are sitting unused in your garage, they should go. However, if you’re not content with just pitching them, open them and sort the items into four piles:

  1. Garbage
  2. Donate
  3. Sell
  4. Put Away

Apply the same principles to the piles of stuff in the basement too.

You may find that you have more in the ‘garbage’ pile than you anticipated.
